Recent Highlights

May 22/09    Hugh Frasers Vancouver jazz power trio THREE PLAY

Hugh Fraser------ piano & Trombone
Bob Murphy -----Hammond B-3 Organ & Piano
Dave Robbins --- Drums

This Vancouver based jazz power trio will feature Hugh Fraser on trombone and piano, Canada's most creative Hammond B-3 performer, Bob Murphy and the Hugh Fraser Quintet and VEJI's rhythmic furnace, Dave Robbins on drums.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear Fraser's trademark and positive interplay with his long term colleges in this sonically unique configuration.

The all encompassing sound of Bob Murphy on a vintage Hammond B-3 organ complete with Leslie allows Robbins and Fraser to improvise, inspire and interact with the blues tinged fleetness of a combo but with the added thrill of the dynamic extremes that the B-3 allows.

In addition to the versatility of the B-3, drum and bone configuration, the transparency of Murphy on piano, with Fraser on bone and the show stopping richness of Fraser on piano and Murphy on B-3 will create unlimited musical possibilities and endless interpretations of Fraser's originals and rarely heard classic organ based standards from the libraries of Jimmy Smith, Joe Zawinul, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith and Brother Jack McDuff.

December 19/08    Hugh Fraser and BONEHENGE!

This powerful 5 trombone and rhythm section gang makes their triumphant return to Hermann's.

Their last visit lead up to their debut c.d. of original compositions, " Bonehenge"which will be available this evening.

This brassy but warm group steps outside of the be bop and swing formate favored by such ensembles and delves into Hugh's Cuban, African and even gospel based tunes to create a rich sonic world that only the lush trombone combination can produce.

Later in the evening, several guest trombonists will carry on the inclusive-tradition of bonehenge and perform a visually and sonically unbelievable collection of Hugh's arrangements he produced for the worlds premiere trombone group, Slide Hampton's World of Trombone, and culminate in festive holiday tunes to lead us into the holidays. If you have a trombone, bring it!!!

Proceeds of this evening will be contributed to an appropriate charity.

October 24th/08    Hugh Fraser Presents Purple Haze
The music of Jimi Hendrix as arranged and recorded by Gil Evans in 1974

Purple Haze is Hugh's recreation of the 1974 Gil Evans recording of the music of Jimi Hendrix. Jimi was going to record with Gil after Miles Davis introduced these sound innovators to each other, but Jimi never returned from England. The Canadian genius Gil Evans became famous with his large translucent orchestrations featuring Miles Davis in the 60's on Sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess - Purple Haze's 13 artists will celebrate Hugh's 50th year with old and new friends joining him from close and far.

The combination of reeds, brass, electro acoustic instruments and voice will fuse with the transcriptions and original arrangements of Jimi's music by Hugh and other band members will prove to be the rarest and most invigorating brace of concerts Victoria has experienced for ages - feel the vitality and creativity of the 70's through Jimi's innovative compositions that deal with the very issues and experiences we are facing today in an intensely positive and joyous celebration!!
